Niwotians!
Here is a summary of the Open Space Project for tomorrow!
Overview- Trees and shrubs are important components of riparian ecosystems because they provide habitat and food sources to wildlife and stabilize banks to prevent erosion. Together we will plant over 100 willow and cottonwood plants along Dry Creek. A trained Plant Ecologist will be on-site to lead this project and answer technical questions.
Schedule- You will meet Erica Christensen, Plant Ecologist, at the parking area between 815 and 830am (directions below). We will stop work around 11:45am, gather and clean our tools, and be finished by noon. For any questions on project day, please contact Erica at 720-413-4134.
Directions to the Monarch parking area-
The parking area is located on the south side of Monarch Road, between the Diagonal Highway (119) and 79th Street. The parking area has room for several cars, but we strongly encourage volunteers to carpool to the parking area.
Weather- June weather in Colorado is generally warm and pleasant, but can be unpredictable. Dressing in removable layers of non-cotton clothing will help you stay dry and comfortable. I would suggest checking the forecast before the project at www.noaa.gov and search Niwot, CO. Even if the forecast predicts bad weather, please plan on attending. We will make an effort to work under mildly adverse weather conditions (cloudy, cold, light drizzle, snow, or wind). If we do decide to postpone this project, we will let you know as soon as possible.
Expectations- We will be doing easy to moderately strenuous work. We will be working in an area with no trailhead facilities such as trash and restrooms.
What you should bring-
Reusable bottle for drinking water
Sunscreen
Work gloves (if you have them)
Hiking shoes/boots
Long pants
Rain gear
Binoculars or camera (optional)
Knee boots or waders (optional)
We will provide-
Snacks
Work gloves (lined and unlined)
Water cooler
First aid kit
Extra knee boots
All necessary tools
Commitment- Your participation is greatly appreciated; it is also the most important component of a volunteer project. Please plan on attending. If something comes up and you cannot make this event, please let me know as soon as possible.
